9.5 Billion People: Too Many?

On March 3rd, 2012, the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy invited Dr. Tim Fox of the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to participate in a speaker-panel session. Prof. Fox, the lead author on a report discussing the role of engineering in sustainable development, argued that engineering has the technical solutions to address problems associated with population growth but challenges lie in implementation. Profs. Joel Cohen, Glenn Denning, Elliott Sclar, and Alex de Sherbinin, with expertise in population, agriculture, urbanization, and the environment, were on hand to respond to Prof. Fox’s talk. For more detailed information on IMechE’s findings and the content of the panel discussion, see this article published in SIPA’s Communiqué and a post in State of the Planet.
