Social and Emotional Learning in Ruhiira, Uganda
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an educational approach that promotes self-awareness, social awareness and relationship skills, among other things. The initiative was started after an ethnographic assessment by Dr. Yanis Ben Amor and Michael Healy showed that 70 to 80 percent of girls and young women in the Ruhiira, Uganda cluster are affected by cross-generational sex, whereby young girls have sex with older men in exchange for gifts such as school fees and mobile phones.
Golda Calonge visited the Millennium Villages Project in Ruhiira to adapt field notes in order to create a culturally competent teaching manual for SEL teachers. She wrote on the Millennium Villages blog about her experience with creating and assessing the manual, and notes her recommendations on next steps.
